The Zarmanazan program was created in 2016 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Portugal) as part of an initiative to revitalize Western Armenian. Its first edition took place in France during the summer of 2017, in collaboration with the Mille et un mondes association and Inalco. Since then, Zarmanazan has consistently offered nearly four weeks of creativity, exchange, and discovery every year within a total immersion context.
Even during the summers of 2020 and 2021, when the Covid pandemic prevented physical gatherings, the program was never put on hold. Zarmanazan transformed into Zartsants, developing numerous online workshops and meetings through an original platform that offered a warm space for daily international rendezvous filled with games, discovery, and creation.
Over the past nine years, nearly 1,000 people have come together: participants aged 10 to 17 since the first year, followed by young adults aged 18 to 24 starting in 2018, nearly 90 teachers in training, as well as pedagogical, administrative, and service teams. Each year has been an opportunity to forge new bonds and inspire the desire to go further together in Western Armenian, notably through the creation of playful online meetings during the year. 2026 will mark the 10th Zarmanazan program, once again bringing together children, adolescents, young adults, teachers in training, and the pedagogical team.
